In 1993, the first FSC Forest Management Certificate (Mexico), and the first Chain of Custody Certificate (USA) were issued.

In February 1996, FSC was registered as a legal entity in Mexico. For the first time, the recognition contracts for four forest management certificates were signed. The first certified and labelled product – wooden shovel hits the market (available in the UK). The first FSC Working Group (UK) was endorsed by the FSC Board. FSC members approved Standard 10 on planted forests.

In January 2003, the FSC Secretariat moved to the FSC International Center in Bonn, Germany, with 25 employees.

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an independent, non-governmental, not-for-profit organization that unites people to promote responsible management of the world’s forests and to find solutions to problems caused by poor forestry practices. It provides standard setting, trademark assurance, accreditation services and market access for companies and organizations interested in responsible forests.

The FSC is a stakeholder-owned system whose purpose is to promote responsible global forest management;

It recognises independent third-party organisations capable of certifying forest management units and forest product processors according to FSC standards;

Its trademark provides international recognition to organizations supporting the growth of responsible forest management;

Its product labels allow consumers around the world to identify products in the world that support the growth of responsible forest management;

FSC conducts marketing programs and information services that contribute to the global mission of responsible forestry;
Over the past 13 years, more than 100 million hectares of forests in 81 countries around the world have been certified according to FSC standards, and thousands of products have been produced from FSC-certified wood and bear the FSC trademark.

FSC is an independent, not-for-profit, non-governmental organization whose mission is to promote environmentally responsible, socially beneficial and economically viable forest management worldwide by developing widely recognized forest management principles and standards. FSC is composed of representatives from environmental protection organizations, timber trade associations, government forestry departments, local residents’ organizations, social forestry groups and wood product certification agencies from more than 70 countries. Its international center was originally located in Oaxaca, the capital of Mexico. The city of Jakar, moved to Bonn, Germany in February 2003. FSC is a relatively mature and perfect forest certification system.
